What is RSV?

Everyone is fairly familiar with the influenza virus, but few individuals are able to identify the early symptoms of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). This illness is extremely common in young children, though it can affect people of all ages.

RSV is associated with symptoms similar to a common cold, which may include:

  • Coughing

  • A low-grade fever

  • Increased irritability

  • Nasal congestion

  • Runny nose

  • Loss of appetite

  • Difficulty breathing (often appearing as wheezing or unusually fast breathing)

RSV can spread from person to person through droplets released during a sneeze or cough.

When To Seek Treatment

Some mild cases of influenza or RSV may resolve on their own with adequate rest and care. However, if you notice any serious symptoms, such as breathing difficulties or a high fever, you should seek medical attention immediately. It is often better to be cautious, even with mild cases, as early treatment can provide faster relief from uncomfortable symptoms.

Diagnosis and Treatment at Davidson Family Medicine

To determine whether your child has influenza or RSV, several tests may need to be performed. This is because there are multiple strains of influenza a child may contract. Influenza A and Influenza B are among the most common, though testing can also identify additional subtypes. Many of these tests are also able to detect respiratory syncytial virus using the same patient sample.

Results are typically available within a few days after the sample is collected and sent to the laboratory. Rapid testing options offer a much faster turnaround time, usually within just a few hours. If you completed flu and RSV testing at Davidson Family Medicine but have not received your results after several days, please contact our office at (704) 892-5454 to inquire about your results.

Based on the outcome of your tests, your pediatrician will recommend a course of treatment to relieve symptoms associated with your child’s illness. If you notice that your child’s symptoms are worsening, please bring them in for a consultation as soon as possible.
